1st Yr. Anniversary - New Format - Can You Feel It? (Week 53)

Monday, September 19, 2011 marked exactly one year since I arrived in LA and with that accomplishment I'm celebrating the anniversary of my quest with a few changes. From this point on there will be no more extensive written posts (at least that's the plan). I have written my heart away for the last year to the point where writing hurts my brain.

Introducing my new video blog format. The majority of my thoughts and experiences will now be expressed in my vlog edition.

I have also upgraded the photo above with a more fierce and epic look. Special Thanks to Eric Erickson for the sponsored photo shoot. Lets say bye bye to this photo which has braced the front of my blog for my first year.

* Last Saturday, my mom unexpectedly blessed me with a donation and I was able to scrape together enough to treat myself with a tablet. I've been wanting it for a while and I'm very happy that I have one. Its a well desired treat and celebration.

Motown Maurice celebrates his first year in LA with a Toshiba Thrive.
* I also made the decision to cut back on writing so much in my blog today.

Monday, September 19, 2011

* Happy Anniversary! I got myself an audition for James Carter/Chris Tucker parody part and it went well. They emailed me the next day to inform me that they want to work with me.

* Missed a Japaneses TV audition because a young lady distracted me but I'm cool with it.

* As of today I started saying temporary staying with a friend from my acting class.  She made the offer months ago but it didn't work out. I contacted her yesterday and she came through. What a blessing. I was able to take a bath for the first time since last Wednesday (September 14th)  Related Post: Scroll to Monday, July 4, 2011

Final Thoughts

In a few words. I am happy my first year accomplishments. There are way to may to list right now. I'm also now finally starting to take my opportunity to become an actor more seriously. Now that I'm not going to be spending so much time blogging as before I'm planning on devoting extra time to developing my craft.

There are definitely greater things ahead in the upcoming year of this quest. What I'm really trying to say is that, "I Can Feel It." Can You Feel It?!!

Week 52: Going out on the Thrive

Last Saturday night (week 51), I had somewhat of an epiphany. As much as I love my Koreatown and Cafe Novel, I figured there's got to be a slightly closer spot with WiFi to work from. Carrying two bags every where can got tiresome. I wanted to find a few spots next to where I'm currently sleeping to eliminate travel and transfer time. That same night on the way to my secret sleeping location I realized the McDonald's exactly one block away had WiFi. Directly next door was a Japaneses franchise named Yoshinoya and they accepted EBT. I was in heavens location and didn't realize it.

Before walking into Yoshinoya, I had a great conversation with my mom in which she received very well. She wasn't to happy about somethings at home and what I told her apparently made her feel a lot better.

Day 357 Sunday, September 11, 2011

* I spent way over 4 hours on my blog at McDonlad's just trying to fix the numerical day order system that had an error. I basically had to revert back to each post and correct them manually because it was off by one. I would of loved to have invested that time doing something else but I don't take the detail of my blog for granted.

Yoshinoya on Vermont & Melose
McDonald's on Vermont & Melrose

Motown Maurice using WiFi at McDonald's for hours. "I didn't even order anything. "

* After long hours at McDonald's I needed to change up my spot. I went for a walk to relax and eat. During that walk I discovered a cool looking cafe called DC Cafe Library. I ended up going there almost every morning starting the next day. Another block down I noticed El Pollo Loco. Its a Mexican style grilled chicken spot... 3 letters, E.B.T. After I placed an order, they presented some coupons for a $5 two piece chicken meal plus sides. That sealed the deal for my return each following day.

Day 358 Monday, September 12, 2011

* I got a call from CBS to inform me that my episode of excused will be airing on Thursday. I already new this because a contact from WTTA My Tampa Bay Station already informed me. They also asked if I would be interested in another opportunity on the show plus a chance to be interviewed. Of course you know how I answered.

* Later that night I walked into DC Cafe Library more interested in watching their TV but for some reason they turned it off a moment or two after I arrived. I then went to the counter to price some granola bars. I'm not sure if I really wanted or if I had a look on my face that indicated that I couldn't afford it. It was only 75 cent and I think I said, "I'll get one next time." I don't quite remember. Either way the young lady asked me which one do you want and I pointed. She then gave it to me for free. I was humbly appreciative of her kindness.

Day 359 Tuesday September 13, 2011

* Another long day at the DC Library Cafe and the Pico Korea branch Library, then I was off to my storage room.

* On my way back from my storage I noticed something cool. This video isn't related to anything. I just thought I would capture it.

* Picked up mail from my old roommates house and took a bath for the first time in about 6 days.

* This book below came in and I'm looking forward to reading it.

Day 363 Saturday, September 17, 2011

* Read PostA De La Soul Request

* On the way back from the De La Soul Shoot, I made a stop by my old roommates house to pick Rush Hour 3 the DVD. I needed to use it to study for an upcoming audition. To my surprise there was a letter there from my mom. It was a beyond super generous donation. I called her speechless. Little did I know but the words of encouragement and motivation in which I shared with her on Sunday, lead her spirit to bless me they way she did. I partly felt bad because on Wednesday my encouraging words got a little mean. She said to me today that it only made her pray more. That's my mom for you. I love you ma.

* On the way out from my old roommates house, I made a stop at Best Buy to purchase a long awaited early 1st year anniversary gift. I wanted to actually wait until the day of which is Monday but I couldn't delay any longer. I well deserved it.

Motown Maurice got a little something from Best Buy. Can you guess what it is?  Find out next week!

Final Thoughts

This week was filled with intense blog affiliated ideas that would have been released in my next week review. In celebration of my 1st year I was going to post all kinds of exclusive never scene before footage from my quest. In addition to that, I was planning on editing an epic video highlight most of my journey. This past Sunday (September 18th) I made a rock solid decision not to do that anymore. There are a couple things I'm still going to do but not the bulk of them. I would be spending too much time in front of a computer. Most importantly, that decision will also upgrade the format of this blog. I'm now looking forward to totally revamping the way I post things on here. I don't want to reveal too much now because I want to surprise you later. Stay posted.

Other than the upcoming blog surprise, this week is the last full week of my 1st year in L.A. and it ended magnificent. The generousness donation from my mom and that super fly gift to myself was more than I could ask for. On Wednesday, I also received a donation from my sponsor for life Pamela Y. Robinson. Thank you Pam.

These rewards are definitely great omens of superb blessings to come. I am on the Thrive of greatness. I'm Thriving for success. I have Thrive power inside of me.

Notice how much I'm Thriving. Hint! Hint!

A De La Soul Request

Post Represents: Saturday, September 17, 2011

I'm started to notice a pattern. As soon as the wardrobe lady dressed me up she said, "You look like Urkel." Moreover, these are a few behind the scene pictures of a quick scene I did in an upcoming new De La Soul video, Must Be The Music.

Final Thoughts

This was a quick and easy $100. I got the call on Thursday. Arrived before 8am on Saturday. Got dressed and the recording of my scene took a few mins. 10 mins of blocking and about 3-4 mins to record in front of a green scene. Then I was out. I probably won't be in the video too much but I should definately be noticeable.

By the way dancing. Yes, dancing.

Improv Olympics

Post Represents: Thursday, September 15, 2011

No one can question the passion of my acting instructor Allen Levin. For a couple extended hours after today's class, a few of us stayed overtime for a powerhouse of improvisation sessions. I really enjoyed these. Most importantly I'm improving.

Its not what  you think. He was mad and I was trying to hold him down. lol

Final Thoughts

Early in the class I did an improv and although the class laughed I improv-ed a weak character. Within the next 3 improv's at the end of class, I focused on listening and not trying to be funny. It made a big difference. My classmate Adam even told me he noticed something different and that I was listening more.

In most cases when I'm funny I barely try. Acting class however it mostly about being real, believable and natural. I would guess that most students in class are seeking dramatic roles. From this point on, I'm going to make stronger effort to build my dramatic acting abilities. Then learn how to mix it with my other abilities.

This is 2nd time in my life a non-African American cut my hair. Chris is Philippians decent, he's passionate and he's got skills. That's all that's important. Besides that Capsule Barbershop has been good to me in terms of location. Not only is it very near where I'm sleeping. I've also been able to make pit stops there to chill and kill time. Plus the also allow me to use their WiFi.

Paper or Online Version (St. Pete Times)

Post Recaps: Thursday, September 15, 2011

To fully understand where I'm going with this post you have to first read my recent news story published in the St. Pete Times. Read: St. Pete Times and the CriticWithin a week or more after that article came out, I noticed another version online. Check this out:

Original Link: http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/media/content/motown-maurice-trades-tampa-los-angeles-go-broke-bid-stardom

SEPTEMBER 01, 2011

Motown Maurice trades Tampa for Los Angeles in a go-for-broke bid for stardom

motownmaurice1.jpgIn the world of Snookie and Real Housewives, it's not unusual to meet someone with little or no background in performing who wants to be a star. But I have never met anyone quite like aspiring late night talk show host Motown Maurice.
I first wrote about him last year, when the then-Tampa resident pulled together all his credit cards to drop more than $30,000 creating a late-night talk show in the Cuban Club which was broadcast on WTTA-Ch. 38. Airing at 1 a.m. on Saturday night, it had a time finding viewers and sponsors, so it was gone after 10 airings. But it eventually left Motown convinced he had to move west to seek his dream.
motownmaurice4.jpgHosting a nationally shown, late night TV talk show.
Its an amazingly specific quest -- especially for a guy who isn't really a comedian, comedy writer or comic actor; the primary entry points into the gig for people like Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon. So when I realized Motown was in Los Angeles pursuing his dreams, I made sure to visit him during my time in Hollywood covering the TV Critics Association's summer press tour.
motownmarucie3.jpgWhat I found, was a still-optimistic, hardworking guy nearly on the verge of homelessness. Unwilling to dilute his focus on show business, Motown hasn't gotten a side job; he was living with a friend from his college days rent-free for 10 months, but when that ended, he was forced to sleep in a dodgy residence facility crammed with people suffering from mental illnesses or struggling with addiction.
Most recently, he's landed in a hotel for a few weeks, courtesy of a jobs program operated by the county of Los Angeles. But he seems to be following a path to stardom along the rockiest road imaginable -- auditioning for commercials, hosting jobs and game shows such as Let's Make a Deal and Baggage while strategizing on how to keep a roof over his head and using a credit card from his mother for food (the jobs program will also provide some relief in food stamps).
motownmaurice3.jpgIt was such an interesting tale, I couldn't help writing a feature for Sunday's Floridian on his quest.
A freelance photographer we hired in Los Angeles, Nancy Pastor, elevated my work with some amazing images documenting Motown's efforts.
At the heart of it all is a simple question: Is this guy fooling himself? Or can his unshakeable will bring success before he burns out or loses faith?

Check out the story I wrote about him, and answer that question for yourself.

-----------------------------------

I noticed a huge difference in the style of writing and I couldn't help but try to understand why the online version wasn't printed instead.  I like the online version better and the reporter did the same thing last year. Before calling to ask why, I first inquired  responses  from my Urgent Message Union on Facebook. Here are the responses I received.

---------------

Tamara Cloonan McClure
Hi, Motown! I just read this article and I read the one that appeared in the paper when you posted it on your blog. I agree that this one is much more positive. I will still comment on your blog rather than taking up a whole page here; I guess a late comment is better than no comment??? ; ) Although, I have written and rewritten many times over in my head. : )

Awesome as well!

Is there any way Eric Deggans can go back and retract the story that was in St Pete Times two weeks ago and replace it with this one???? What is going on, this is such a nice article!

September 8 at 5:47pm

JMJ
He definitely should, you're absolutely right. He needs to go back and retract the story in the St. Pete Times.

Alice Beatty
Good follow-up article. I read the first article again, and you're right. The follow-up is better, and I think it comes across as more positive because it is obvious more thought went into it. Comparing the two makes the first one seem rushed, as though he didn't really organize his notes/thoughts, and just wanted to make deadline or something. I will check out your blog, and comment there. Be blessed!
September 8 at 4:02am

Phil Buck
He might have more personal freedom with the blog than what get's put into paper. Papers' always have their own agenda and limit what get's put in and how much gets put in. I wouldn't worry about it too much. At least you're getting some press, right? Keep it up.
September 12 at 6:40pm

Final Thoughts

Before calling I realized that Phil had a good point. Regardless of his reasons, I'm still appreciative but I still desire full understanding. I called him today for the first time since he wrote the pieces to first thank him and to ask a few questions of course. His explanation informed me of the differences. The newspaper version is reviewed and edited by someone else. They pick the pictures and I believe they also write the headline. The story has to immediately address whats happening to the readers. Its a different format and platform. As a writer Eric Deggans has the responsibility to deliver the facts to the reader. Although he told me they really didn't change anything in his story, I understood the circumstances.

As apposed to the online version/blog its a more conversational piece. There is much more freedom in writing that.  The power of knowing is a wonderful thing. This allows me not to get emotionally pointless and instead use the knowledge towards the benefit of future stories. Initially, I was trying to figure out "What in the world is going on?" Now that I understand, I know what to expect in the future. Not only with future articles with him but with other reporters. I'm learning the process and that's most important.

Pin Point EBT

Post Represents: Tuesday, September 13, 2011

My 2010 income taxes has been the most daunting task of my quest and I am amazed on how financially swiftly I was able to get it done. Every since 2004/2005 I've requested extensions for my business and personal return. I'm allowed to do that because I own a business. The thought of completing my 2010 taxes horrified me because of all the expenses I accumulated through The Motown Maurice Show earlier that year.

I finally started piling all the information in week 47. Since then, I've been back and forth with my account about the specifics. In the back of my mind I'm anticipating a bill worth $350- $450. That's generally been the range over the years.

He sent me the bill today and to my surprise it was a bill whooping $659.00. I apparently owned him for my quarterly reports throughout the year. Immediately I'm thinking, "Where am I going to get that kind of money." I know my mom gave me an emergency credit card for food and transportation but not for this.

My last financial miracle: Checks Delayed with a Purpose allotted me some cushion but not enough. After a few moments of thinking I thought of my new EBT cash money. Last Friday, September 9, 2011
my EBT cash came in for the first time. I wanted to use that to purchase my long desired Toshiba Thrive but my taxes were due the following Thursday. I couldn't waste anytime. I didn't even know how to access that money. I took a wild guess and shocking enough it worked at a Chase Bank ATM.

I pulled all $240 from my EBT cash another $120 from my personal. Added it together will that bit left over from that Baggage money (Checks Delayed with a Purposeand I had the money for my taxes.

By the time I took care of the bill I was left with less then $100 in my personal and less than the same in my business account.

Final thoughts

The moral to this story is the accurateness of the EBT cash. This tax bill needed immediate attention due to the blessing of the EBT cash I got it done. What blessing!

Week 51: When the Going Gets Tough

The time is 9:47am pacific time and I'm at DC Library Cafe (800. N. Vermont Ave. Los Angeles.) I'm literally fighting back tears right now because this song "When the Going Gets Tough" is speaking to my soul and experiences. There is a slight odor lurking from my body because I haven't taken a bath since Thursday night. I'm not even sure where the odor is coming from, lol. Its now Monday and I'm still not sure when I'll get to bathe again. My homeless trails continue as I routinely travel between my storage room back and forth sometimes carrying two over backed bags (Thank God for my secret yet clever sleeping location). My days have returned to one free WiFi location to another. There is generally nothing comfortable on my agenda right now. Regardless of the circumstances...

I got something to tell you
I got something to say
I'm gonna put this dream in motion
Never let nothing stand in my way
When the going gets touch
The tough get going...

I'm gonna get myself 'cross the river
That's the price I'm willing to pay...

Darlin', I'll climb any mountain
Darlin', I'll do anything....

Its now just over 15mins later and I need to use the restroom really badly. It appears as though this location doesn't have a restroom. A few blocks down the street is a library on Santa Monica Blvd. I will continue the publication of this post shortly. "When the going gets Tough"

10:40am:

Let me tell you something else. Taking a leak when you got to go really badly is an extremely liberating feeling. Ahhhhhhhh.....What a release! I have a few other things to post and I'll back in my Final Thoughts below.

Day 350 Sunday, September 4, 2011

This is awkward!

* Read PostLifebook's Potluck X2

Day 351 Monday. September 5, 2011

* Listen to: Hustle & Shuffle Interview with Dionna Chambers

* I failed to mention on week 49 (Sat) but ever since Eric Erickson host of The Electric Carnival last invited me as a guest host on August 24 this book and DVD The Late Shift Book Letterman, Leno and The Network Battle For The Night by Bill Carter has been over taking my mind.

Motown Maurice is reading The Late Shift Book Letterman,
Leno and The Network Battle For The Night by Bill Carter

I've been aware of that book for a while and should of purchased it long ago. As much as I appreciate the kick in the butt from Eric, there is no reason for me not to have already own this book. Its been on my mind so much since, I finally purchased the book, DVD/movie and a few other related titles. I picked it up ealier today from my old roommates house and I'm in love with it. After reading The Alchemist, I wanted to try reading some different kinds of reading material.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

I tried reading some Greek mythology and an acting book a few weeks before but nothing meshed. Late Night is my purpose and I to feed myself with it. I must admit, these words are very nutritious.

Day 352 Tuesday, September 6, 2011

* I ran out of my motel for an audition because the bus was right across me nearing its stop. Without bursting into full blast the bus driver saw me, opened the door while the bus was moving and she let me in. She said something like, "Are you coming in. Its hard not to notice you with your high top." She really didn't have to do that and I really felt rewarded for her kindness. I told her thank you and she said, "Just bring me a cup a ice tomorrow.

* Auditioned for the product Emergen-C near Universal Studios.

Day 353 Wednesday, September 7, 2011

* Jump on a free head shot photo shoot offered by two students (Josh/Francis) in Lifebook class who are starting a new production company.

* Read Post: On The Road Again

* Read PostSmoothest Poet on Television

* Once again I'm back to sleeping at my secret back up location.

Day 354 Thursday, September 8, 2011

Read PostWho Wants to be a Reality Star?

Motown Maurice looks like a good reality star don't you think?

* Spent a big part of the morning at Cafe Novel to edit the realty show submission video.

* Pop up audition notice for Bagua Shoes for Saturday which made me have to cancel Saturday's prior plans.  I normally never have anything planned for Saturday.

* Rehearsed for an upcoming scene.

* Lifebook Class

Motown Maurice is learning the power of touch in acting.

* In preparation for a basketball spec shoot tomorrow, I spent the night at my classmate/producers house. The first thing I did was take a shower because I had no clue when I'm going to be taking one again.

Day 355 Friday, September 9, 2011

* Read Post: Basketball & The Beach

* My food stamp card was replenished today, this time in full plus some more. What a blessing! I'm rich again. $200 EBT and $243.00 EBT cash. Praise the lord (Related Post: Food Stamp & Motel Rich). You just don't understand how much a blessing these food stamps has been.

Day 356 Saturday, September, 10, 2011

* Auditioned for Bagua Shoes in Van Nuys. I was scheduled to be a escort at the 2011 Alma Awards hosted by George Lopez and Eva Longoria but I canceled it for the audition. I'm confident I made the right choice. A young lady named Lisa told me about the volunteer gig about a week before. I met her at The Billboard conference October 26-28th.

* I didn't sleep very well tonight. My body was aching from playing basketball the day before and there is something biting or itching me at night. I don't know what it is. I basically sleep on the floor in my serect location but I also feel bothered at times when I'm sitting.

Read Post: Thursday Night on Excused

* Spent a lot of time working (WiFi) out of Cafe Novel....

* An idea sparked as I left Cafe Novel. Its to make my week a lot easier and less strenuous. It has to do with my selection of WiFi locations. I'll explain next week.

Final Thoughts

Its been about 9 hours since I started writing the intro of this post. I started at the DC Cafe, moved on the library and now I'm posting this at the McDonald's on Vermont/Melrose. When I'm done I'm going to do my best to keep away from the internet/computer for a while but that's probably not going to happen. Next week is my 1 year anniversary since I arrived in LA and I have much to accomplish. I don't have time to worry about comforting perks, taking a bathe and home-style amenities. Things have gotten tough but so what! The Tough Gets Going. Next time this week...ITS TIME TO CELEBRATE.

Post Represents: Friday, September 9, 2011

There is nothing like a video shoot on the beach. Two of my Lifebook classmates (Francis/Josh) who recently started a production company of their own cast me for a basketball spec commercial. It was fun and I got to spend time on the beach. Venice beach appears to be the ideal place for basketball shoots among other productions. I was there in June for a bootleg basketball pilot (See Related Post Below). Moreover, I've been meaning to go the beach for a while now and today I got a two for one deal.  I even managed to record some nice footage of myself there. I plan to incorporate it in a new video very soon.

Motown Maurice, Lifebook classmates, Venice beach...

One time for Francis who cast me for the shoot. I specifically requested to spend a  night at his place so I  won't haven't any problems getting their on my own in the morning. (In addition to that, it would be a great opportunity to squeeze in a shower.) We both leave Lifebook Acting class late on Thursdays nights so I thought it made sense. Not only did he agree to the idea, I left the next morning with some Jordan's. It was a little big for him, perfect for the shoot and he blessed me with them.  Although its a size 11 and I normally like wearing a size 12 but I'm making it work. Its not a bad fit. This is much appreciated. Thank you Francis.

Motown Maurice and new much appreciated Air Jordan's. Thanks Francis.

Motown Maurice & Michael T. at the Sidewalk Cafe. Its fruit and water for me guys.
It doesn't seem right eating unhealthy on the beach.

Final Thoughts

I really like this beach. I remember thinking it would be nice to leave the the beach for a while. What a second! That wasn't a thought, I believe that was a vision. :-)
