Week 413: When the Going Gets SLOW!

Weekly Written Review

ATTENTION to all my blog spys! YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!! Thank you for reading :-)

It's so easy to complain about things. I never want to be that person. I absolutely desire the next level of my quest but like everything else that's great, you have to fight for it. Meanwhile, I'll always dislike slow days. You know those low spirited days. Last week was pretty full and I should appreciate the slow periods like this but I don't.  Low spirited days always find a way to show up no matter how hot you are. Thank God for basketball, tennis and Nintendo Switch. If it wasn't for those activities I would probably constantly be in deep depressive states. There's nothing like fully engaging yourself in a game of basketball/tennis, engulfed with the goal of winning. That's why life is good. I play sports and video games anytime I want and desire. My situation isn't perfect but it's a blessing and I refuse to invest my energy in complaining about stuff.

However, I will mention some foolishness I noticed/experienced this week. The past two weeks or so I had an audition and callback for an At&T commercial. Of course, I didn't get it but I got to see it on television this week. This is great because you can see who did book the role and compare yourself to that person (lol). Not the case here, the role I auditioned for was completely cut out. The role myself and several others auditioned for didn't exist in the final product. This isn't the time this has happened to me. I auditioned for a role on Blackish, in which I totally thought I did well in. My character never even made the cut. I'm sorry but the industry has to do better about wasting peoples time like this. I understand why people get sick of this process and/or gets burnt out. To be clear, I'm far from burnt out. I don't think that's possible anymore. However, I am getting tired so many waste of time auditions. It's a process that isn't fit for me to succeed in. Nonetheless, I'm totally just tolerating it until I figure out how to get to the next level of my quest.

In other news, another person inquired about my live hosting talents this week. Hosting the past couple weeks has begun building my hosting reputation. I was asked to host some type of upcoming pageant but I turned it down. Not because there's no pay but because it's just way too far out. Public transportation would of took over 3 hours to get there. That's not worth my time/effort

For the moment, things are slow but it's only temporary. It never seems like a temporary situation but records show that the slowness doesn't last forever. The slowness is hard to appreciate but I need to appreciate it more.  If it wasn't for this slow period, things like watching a Charlie Chaplin film with my landlady would never happen. Moments like that are to be grateful for.

I wasn't sleeping but I understood the first time. There was no need for them to return all those times to warn me for no reason. I told them this was ridiculous and that they should just tell me to leave if they don't want me there.

Week 412: Great Host They Say

Weekly Written Review

During my first or second year in LA I recall a few random people telling me I look like a host. Almost 8 years later people are now telling me I am a great host. So about a month ago a lovely lady named Vida asked me to host an event. I basically declined it because I try not to confirm non paying gigs way in advance. I don't mind doing them but I rather wait and see if anything bigger/paid pops up first. Fast forward to last week, Vida reaches out and tells me that they're still looking for a host and they really want me. Vida Ghaffari is an incredible person and it's hard to tell her no. I agreed and took on the role of awards show host. Now for the rest of the post, I'm going to be as friendly as possible. Saying that the event was a little unorganized is an understatement. I'll spare most of these details. Among the chaos but we got through it and the audience seemed to notice me as a huge part why. Before the event ended, one of the presenters took it upon himself to compliment me and my co-host. He acknowledged our ability to keep the event together and said I reminded him of a young Chris Rock. When the event ended, more and more compliments kept pouring in. "You did a great job." You're a great host." "You're really funny." "Congrats" I didn't get to enjoy all of the feedback like I wanted to because my bookbag was missing. Thankfully, we were able to contact the person who accidentally took it. Aside from that, I was the man for a minute. A gorgeous young lady even exchanged Instagram contacts with me. After a few replies, she stopped messaging me but hey, it was a cool moment while it lasted.

A few days later, someone at the event reached out to me on Facebook, told me how great of a job I did hosting the awards show on Sunday. Then he asked me to host his film screening Q&A on Saturday. Might I add that I've known his person since 2011 or 2012 and although he always says great things about me, he never involved me in his events/projects. He also runs a magazine in which he never considered me for until now. I accepted the offer, did my thing and after the event, more and more compliments kept pouring in. My favorite was from a guy that worked at the UCLA venue. My first interaction with him was our pre-event run through. After the event, he greeted me with big eyes and said, "You did a great job. You're so low key but on stage, you really shine big." I told him, "You just summed up my entire personality." Also, a lady that runs a pageant approached me about her coming up event. She said she had someone in mind to host it, but she would love for me to host instead.

The moral to the blog post is, wow/cool. I've never been a big fan of live event hosting. The reason for that is because it doesn't have all the television structure that I love and..forget all that. I'm entirely in my element any and everywhere. I'm truly grateful for these opportunities to practice my improv skills and exercise spontaneous comedy.

The most interesting thing is, the majority of those compliments came from people who don't realize I'm the future of Late Night Television. Doing a great job as a host is in my blood. It's what I do. It's who I am. It's the nature of this beast!

Instead, I'm riding with my tennis partner Erick. He arrives a little bit later but that works for me. I got a free ride plus I get to save my transportation coins.

Week 411: What if I curse God!

Weekly Written Review

I thought about cursing God this week. I even used a sentence with a curse word in a hypothetical situation out loud. But, that's way outside my character. It's just not me. Moreover, peace surpasses all understanding. I really thought I was set for a callback this week. I got nothing. Last week I had an NBA 2k audition in which I thought I did great. After leaving the room, I made direct eye contact with who was probably the casting director watching me on a screen from another part of the building. No callback. No nothing. Earlier in the week, I sent an email to Jimmy Kimmel's in-house casting director and she just avoided me. Oh well. This won't discourage my plan to claim what's rightfully mine. I started taking note of the callback dates on my calendar this week. I purposely didn't pay attention to those dates in the past because I didn't want to raise my hopes up too high. Forgot all that. What's mine is mine! If others can do it so can I. For now I'm going to focus this strategy on commercial auditions. A big one is coming soon. I can sense it and feel it.
