Week 423: This Leading Moment

Weekly Written Review

For most of the last few weeks, I've had nothing groundbreaking to write about. I rushed through most of my blogs anticipating this leading moment. This leading week. When it's all said and done, Week 423 may be the most or one of the most significant weeks of my odyssey. Three things took place this week that could represent a turning point.

The most significant of the three began two years ago. I booked a big role in a film entitled Snake Outta Compton. Booking the role means nothing. Completing the shoot also meant nothing. There's always a chance the film will never get seen. Two years later it got picked up by Lionsgate for nationwide distribution. It's been out in the UK since summer and that still means nothing. Moving forward to Sunday, October 21, Snake Outta Compton had a sold-out premiere at The Downtown Independent. Now, this film is starting to have meaning. This premiere was a first-time experience for me. My name is second in the credits and all I had to do was show up, pose for photos and chit-chat. Doing such a simple task is not in my genetic makeup, especially when I can do more. During the event, someone on the Snake team complimented for handling the media but that wasn't my intentions. I think since the organizers of the event didn't make much media plans, I took on the appearance of handling it. I simply had the vision to expand the social exposure of Snake Outta Compton with some pre and post interviews. I assigned my friend Kevin of Kevin Boot Photography to take photos and I also had an assignment for his video equipment. With my direction, I had a cameraman (Jeff Meacham) and an interviewer (Nicole Rose Julian) conduct interviews with guest, cast, and crew. For various reasons, I'm not sure if I will do this again moving forward but I'm glad I did it for my first premiere.

Overall the event was great. There was one hiccup with someone on my media team yelling at a person but it was quickly rectified with an apology. Most of the people I invited showed up and they were all sincerely happy for me. It was a good moment to shine and that's what you're supposed to do at a premiere. It's equivalent of a wedding day for the actor. It's a rare moment some actors work extremely hard for and some will never enjoy this type of experience. I played the part...somewhat. I did what I was supposed to do for the moment but left foot was already 10 steps into the future. Two days after the premiere (Tuesday, October, 21) Snake Outta Compton was available nationwide. Anyone can now purchase the DVD on at Wal-Mart, Target and Best. You can also order it Amazon or stream it on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Video, Xbox Video, Redbox Digital, and several more outlets.

Some people received their ordered DVD's early and started posting photos of it on Facebook. Others went to the store and took pictures of the DVD on the shelves among other popular movies. I haven't had a chance to see it in the store yet but I look forward to seeing it for myself. So that does this all mean? I'd say I'm in an incredible space right now. I started producing and selling DVD's since college and my distribution strategy was based on or far I was willing to drive. Years later, I booked a prominent role in a silly movie and it's now available nationwide. Again, what does this all mean? It still means nothing. Ideally, it would be great to get exposure from the film leading to more bookings. The best case scenario is Snake Outta Compton becomes mega successful and a sequel is made. Perhaps it could lead to a trilogy. Why not six films? If they can make six Sharknado's why not make seven Snake Outta Compton's.

It this the new Shaknado series?
A few weeks ago, I recall blogging about putting all my eggs in one basket. I might have referenced it as in putting my eggs in a Snake Basket. That basket has come and gone. At this very moment, I have no eggs. I don't mean to sound doubtful but now that the premiere is done and gone, I no longer see my role in Snake Outta Compton as a potential turning point. I was at least previously hoping for a turning point. To a slight degree, I can probably use some leverage from my role, but I'm essentially starting over at this very moment. I truly doubt any casting directors are going to be seeking me out because of my riveting role as "Pinball." Thus, I got to take any amount of momentum leftover and move forward fast. I can't look back. A worldwide distributed film doesn't guarantee anything. That's the reality of the entertainment business. There's a bigger chance that it only makes my journey harder. I could be forming into an unbookable typecast. Speculating about the positive or negative affects of this film is pointless. As a result, I just got to keep it moving.

I'm honestly a bit empty right now. I'm mostly empty from all the editing after the premiere. Editing those interviews was a bit intensive. I thought was in the best interest of the film to get the videos out during the opening weekend. Watching people steal videos/photos for its source also isn't very encouraging. Isn't social media designed for sharing? Nonetheless, I went from living in the movement in a great space into empty place. What's next? That just means my spirits are a little low but that's nothing new.

The very next day after the premiere, I was scheduled to do background work. After a long wonderful night from being one of the main attractions, I had to wake up the next morning to do background work. The transition is kind of deflating but oh well. Thankfully, I don't have bighead syndrome. I humbly showed up for background work at Paramount Studios. It's for a new show called Family Reunion that's going to eventually launch on Netflix. Last week, I responded to Central Casting for a featured Role named Marty. I didn't hear back about the featured role. I later got an inquiry about playing a student on the same show. That essentially means I'll be walking in the background. I arrived on set and in a short period of time, they put us to work. They had positioned by the lockers within a good view of the cameras. I was content about my position early on. After my first scene was completed, I made my way back to the holding area. I wondered a little and before I could grab a seat, they grabbed me for the next scene. They switched out the preselected Marty feature role and replaced him with me. To my understanding, I was told the director wanted a "Black" Marty. I jumped right into the role. Things were moving really fast. While still in the rehearsal stages, I got pulled out of the scene. I thought they were going to replace me with someone else. They actually needed to change my pants into shorts. I will more than likely be very visible in the entire episode. With long pants and short pants.

Another cool thing about the shoot was the company I was in. This show Family Reunion is starring Mark Curry, Loretta Devine, and Tia Mowry. Plus, they were all very pleasant. Each of them interacted with me a refreshing kind of way. Whether it was Tia greeting me when crossing paths or it might have been Loretta making jokes about what I was wearing. I had to wear a dress during the last scene of the day but it's not as bad as it sounds. I wasn't the only guy wearing a dress. Don't judge. You'll understand when you watch the episode. I hope you'll understand. Moreover, they all gave off positive energy. That's the kind of energy that I appreciate on a film set. I even got eye contact and a subtle greeting from Mark Curry on the second day. He gave me a lot of eye contact during the dress scene. The reason why any of this is news is that some actors won't even acknowledge the existence of background actors. I won't say any names but a lot of the leads on the show Grown-ish are notorious of that. I asked around and I'm not the only background actor that experienced this with the Grown-ish cast. Sure, the Grown-ish cast is a lot younger but that's still no excuse. Aside from the comparisons, I would consider my two days doing background work on Family Reunion as magical. It was the first time I had my role bumped up and I would love to believe it's a sign.

During the summer, I declared this period as my background farewell tour. That's the title of one of my blog posts. With Snake Outta Compton was on the horizon, I anticipated the birth of a turning point soon afterward. I'm still not against background work and there's probably a lot more lined up in my future. Without or without the foreseeable future of background work, the thought of my feature bump being some type of sign was welcoming. It was also nice to get compliments from someone seeing me in action for the first time. The first person I noticed when I arrived was a lady named Susan. She's friends with my landlady and it took her a moment to recognize me. It took me half a moment but it's understandable. It was the first time was saw each other outside of my home environment. We spoke a few times throughout the day and she had a lot of great things to say about my performance.

The third item of significance is a SAG Toyota commercial audition I had on Friday. The notice came to me at a surprise on Thursday. I've been in this business for over eight years and I've never ever booked a SAG commercial audition. Not once, not even as background. I generally don't even write about commercials in detail but how serendipitous it would be to book my first SAG commercial audition during Week 423. That would truly represent a turning point in my quest, ushering in the breakthrough I've been longing for. I left the room with a positive outlook on my performance but of course, that doesn't mean anything. I left the audition room confident hundreds of times before and it always resulted in not booking the gig. Yet, hope is still alive and well. Upon writing this I don't know what's going to happen. I didn't hear anything during the weekend but I'm assuming they'll make contact with actors on Monday of Week 424. Only time will tell. If I get it I'll be totally wowed. If not, oh well. That's the business as usual.

As significant as I desire Week 423 to be, I still have to wait a while to see if it will add up to any real significance. The truth is, I won't realize the impact of Week 423 anytime soon...The business of entertainment is to hurry up and wait. That's probably the only part of the business I believe I've perfected.

Week 422: Tour Guide Express

Weekly Written Review

From the start of this week, there are only seven days remaining before I confront what is essentially the significant day of my journey. Sunday, October 21, represents an event that could be the turning point of my quest. There's potentially a lot on the line for Week 423 and I took on the role of a tour guide a few days before :-) I spent most of this week preparing and planning ahead because of my anticipated guest. I didn't complete everything but I think the most important stuff was completed. I wanted to give myself a hair but I couldn't find the time. Oh well...The last time I had a guest visit me was during the first quarter of 2012. That was an interesting experience. There were a lot of fun moments but it didn't end very well. Hence, that's not the reason I haven't had a guest since. No one has seriously acquired about visiting me until recently. Prior conversations have been mostly small talk until I mentioned the premiere of Snake Outta Compton. The screening was the deciding factor. It allowed my guest to book a ticket worth purchasing. Early Friday afternoon, I rented a car with Blue LA, picked up my guest from LAX and officially became a tour guide for the remainder of the weekend. Using the description as "tour guide" might come off as negative but that's not necessarily true. There were a lot of pros to the situation. There were also some cons but I won't mention any of them in detail. Guiding someone around the city of LA had its cool points. It was nice to visit places I haven't been in a while. Plus seeing the joy and excitement in the persons face during their first time LA experiences is rewarding. It's my pleasure to please, serve, tour and guide. The cons, on the other hand, are too personality specific for me to blog about.  I don't use this platform to rant about individual people. I prefer to rant about my overall journey and unwelcoming annoyances in the entertainment industry.

My guest actually did absolutely nothing wrong. Yet, sometimes in life what a person doesn't do trigger flags or causes me to fade away. In my current day interactions with people, more specifically women, I'm able to make acute observations about a person within a short period of time. Often times those observations will affect the energy I put into that person moving forward. My energy is one of my superpowers and I refuse to share it with certain types of people. Thus, energy is just a small part of it. I'll easily fade away from people if there's no effort or if the person plain out doesn't have it. Unfortunately, my interactions with my guest reminded me of a handful of people from my past. Some of those people didn't have it nor did they reciprocate any energy or effort. To be frank, some of those people from my past were way too into themselves to sustain a relationship with me. In simple terms, this weekend came to a conclusion without a positive impression. Upon recognizing certain personality traits in people, I immediately know what time it is and I begin to clock out.

I would like to be more descriptive but that might cause me to be specific and I rather not. Under these circumstances, I'll write about a different but somewhat similar situation that caused me to fade away from a person. January of 2017, I was still in Tampa for Christmas break. A good portion of 2016 I was in contact with a college friend. She went through a lost and I did my best to be a shoulder for her. Aside from the lost, we touched base from time to time. We talked about me visiting her during the break and I made it happen. I took an Amtrac to the location and she had me waiting over an hour and a half after my arrival. The train ride was already 4 hours. I kept her informed and she knew I was coming. None of that mattered because she was still late. When she arrived I took a deep breath and I did my best to put her tardiness behind me. I didn't complain. I might have been a bit silent because of the energy she already depleted but I didn't complain. On the way to her house, she spent most of the ride complaining about her job. This is the same job we were both celebrating about her getting a few months ago. We also had to stop at the supermarket to get food because her refrigerator had none in it. Even after shopping, there wasn't much food available to eat. She planned nothing ahead of time and I had a miserable few days. The thing about me is, if I'm in a situation where I'm not pleasured, I won't express it. I get through it and make sure I never put myself in that situation again. I've been cordial with her the few times we've communicated since the trip but she certainly isn't worthy of my full energy.

Silence is my overall approach with humans, a species I've yet to fully comprehend. So will I ever be a Tour Guide again? Maybe but it's certainly not something I'm looking forward to doing anytime soon. This weekend was also a reminder of how much I enjoy being to myself. I'm a loner. I have the powers to adapt to any situation but I'm built and conditioned for an isolated lifestyle.

* On My Block - Background work (8:30am - 7:20pm) I didn't enjoy the shoot that much because you probably won't see me in the episode. Aside from the sucky shoot, I connected with one a young man at the shoot and we ended up playing basketball at the Olympic Place apartments the same night. I had fun but the rims were not 10 feet. It was shorter. Not cool.

Week 421: Counting Down

Weekly Written Review

This was a good week. I got a lot done and I got close with an audition. I probably wasn't close at all but I got a callback. It was a full scheduled week. I played my weekly fix of sports and did some work in front of the camera. I loaded up on food and I dominated in tennis singles. The highlights are below but there's nothing with significance to report. We have to wait until Week 423 for that. On that note, I'm out.

* Oculus call back

* My audition call-time was 11:30am. I had to do background for Grown-ish at 11am. I took a chance and got to the audition at 10am. To my surprise, they already started. After that I took a Lyft to Burbank and got to Disney studios at 11:04am. Then I found out the call time got pushed to 11:30am so I was extra early. It was a good day.

* Grown-ish background work

Friday, October 12, 2018

* Tennis...I started out rough ( actually always start off rough when playing tennis) I lost the first set 5 to 7. Then in the next set, I was losing 5 to Love. It wasn't looking good. All Erick needed was one more when. Somehow, someway I hit the switch. I came back and own the next 7 games and but him 7 to 5. I was really impressed with that win. I won the next set 6 to 1. We were playing a best of 3 matches.

Week 420: It's Movie Season

Weekly Written Review

Wow, it's the fourth quarter of 2018. How time flies! The year is basically over and I'm ending it while watching a lot of movies. I recently joined the SAG-Aftra Film Society and I can see box office movies with a guest on Friday's and Saturday's. It started this week and it was cool. It gives me a reason to go to the movies to do homework and a better reason to treat a good person in my life.

Week 419: The Fall of Motown Maurice

Weekly Written Review

In February,  I had the realization that it will be The Summer of Motown. That didn't end up happening. All the projects I expected to release during the summer got pushed back. Now it's set to be The Fall of Motown Maurice. That's right. Sunday, September 23rd represented the first full day of fall and in exactly one month from that date Snake Outta Compton will release nationwide. I thought another project I'm starring in was going to release in the fall but I heard it's plagued with animation problems. Oishi Demon Hunter might not release until next year. That's if they ever work it out. Reguardless, I'm setting the Snake Outta Compton release to be the turning point of my career and I'm finding inspiration everywhere.

After a special person sent me a link to an Erykah Badu song, Window Seat. Her music really caught my attention. Espeically after I noticed her get naked in that video! I realized I've been slipping on her tunes. I love nu-soul with D'Angela being my favorite artist but I've never really played much attention to her. Other than, Erykah Badu being the sound track of most poerty nights, I never proactively tried to listen to her. Now that she's got my attention I started to research her I learned a lot of cool things about her, mostly from her Wikipeda page. I listened to her music on repeat for most of this week and beyond. I Want You, is the jam. When I wasn't thinking about her, I was thinking about the upcoming release of Snake Outta Compton and the defination of the word leverage. I'm thinking percisely about how I can leverage what I have or set up what I need to be fully equipped and aligned for the Snake Outta Compton release. As a result, Wikipeida came to mind. My recent research my have helped with that. Can you believe  I don't have a Wikipedia page!? At one time around 2010-ish I might of had a sentence or two up but it eventually came down. I don't know who put it up and it wasn't good anyway. Well it just so happens, that of this week "someone" has been interviewing me and establishing my page 😉. We found out early on that Wikipedia is strick, which is good. The "person" put up a single paragraph and it was declined. After after the "person" decided to go all in. With the release of Snake Outta Compton looming, I believe this is a great look. People may love the cast and crew then start looking them up. At the end of the day, it's just another avenue to share my incredible story. A story that the whole world will soon know.

Well, in my family when you remember your dream with numbers you play them. I took my moms advice and waited until Wednesday the 26th to play different combinations of 26. I didn't win anything but it was a cool change of pace. I truly can't recall the last time I played the lottery. This was probably my second third time overall while in LA.
